Foodness Gracious - Week 74

Recipes

Tostadas are basically the crispy, crunchy canvas of the food world. Think of them as edible plates that actually improve your meal instead of just holding it. You can pile them high with all kinds of toppings, and they’ll never complain—just sit there and get delicious.

This week’s recipe is a celebration of spring on a tostada. We’re highlighting Tostada with Hummus, Brussels Sprouts and Spring Peas by layering creamy hummus with finely shredded raw Brussels sprouts (yes, raw—and they’re fabulous), sweet spring peas, and paper-thin radishes for a little peppery snap. It’s fresh, it’s vibrant, and it’s basically what your favorite salad wishes it could be.

Hummus might seem like a curveball here, but it’s doing some heavy lifting. Not only does it add richness and a nutty depth, but it also acts as the glue that keeps all those beautiful toppings from sliding off the tostada and into your lap. Pro home chef move!

Raw Brussels sprouts get a bad rap, but when you halve them or even shred them thin, they turn into this crunchy, slightly earthy slaw that pairs perfectly with the creamy hummus and sweet peas. Honestly, you might start tossing them in everything.

Top it off with those radish ribbons, and you’ve got color, texture, flavor, and crunch all in one hand-held package. It’s the kind of thing that looks fancy but takes almost no time, which is our favorite kind of cooking!

Reviews

Can you just purchase pre-made tostadas at the store? Of course!

But wouldn't you rather make fresh tostadas in your own fryer like you are participating on Beat Bobby Flay (my favorite show by the way)?

Having your own fryer adds a tool to your home chef arsenal that can be such a fun option from breakfast through dessert.

Trust me, I go the easy route on a regular basis. I'm a family of five with three children and time gets away from us. However, dropping the tortilla in the fryer basket and hearing that sizzle is a fun part of the cooking process.

Not to mention the fryer can be used for so many other recipes. Fries, chicken fingers, donuts...anything!

The home kitchen fryer is a game changer!

Responsibility

Speaking of essential tools in your home kitchen!

We have a new article in our Responsibility section where we highlight items such as whisks, knives and Blenders that are essential for any home chef.

Is the essential list the same for every home chef? Of course not. Each home chef has their own dietary preferences that can guide their essential home kitchen list.

This is a fun article that can get you started and maybe expose you to something new that you don't know you needed. Enjoy!

Foodness Fun - Trivia

This week we are embracing the tostada as a blank palette for lots of fun ingredients. We went very non-traditional with hummus, Brussels sprouts and spring peas. You may lean more to the traditional with a protein, veggies and sour cream or even a homemade crema.

To close out this week and our love of the tostada, let's test your knowledge on the tostada in the Mexican culture!
